The Word Counter goes beyond a simple tally. Words are counted by splitting on whitespace, characters with and without spaces, sentences by terminal punctuation, and paragraphs by blank lines. Reading time assumes an average silent-reading pace of 200 words per minute and speaking time a presentation pace of 130 words per minute — useful when a talk, video script, or podcast segment has to fit a slot. The unique-word count and average word length hint at vocabulary variety, while the Top keywords panel surfaces your most repeated meaningful words (common filler words like "the" and "and" are excluded) so you can spot overuse and sanity-check keyword density before publishing. Everything runs locally in your browser and updates on every keystroke; nothing is uploaded.

How are words counted?+

The tool trims the input and splits on any whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks). Punctuation that touches a word counts as part of that word, matching how most word processors count.

How are sentences and paragraphs detected?+

Sentences are split on terminal punctuation — periods, question marks, exclamation marks, and ellipses — followed by a space or the end of the text. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines.

How accurate are the reading and speaking times?+

They are estimates based on widely used averages: 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 words per minute for speaking aloud. Dense technical text reads slower; casual copy reads faster.

What counts as a "top keyword"?+

Words of three or more letters, compared case-insensitively, with common English filler words (the, and, for, with, …) excluded. The percentage is that word's share of all counted words — a rough keyword-density figure.

Are emojis counted as one character?+

Most emojis are one or more UTF-16 code units, so the character count may report more than one character per visible emoji. If you need platform-accurate grapheme counts, use the Character Counter with Platform Limits tool.

Is my text saved anywhere?+

No. The counter runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
